Decorative limestone from a quarry near Marčana has been known since antique times. Today, a modern open quarry is being developed from an old mining project.
The deposit is built of massive, thick-layered, recrystallized bioclastic limestones of geological age of Cenomanians (Upper Cretaceous). The fragments are mostly from ore shells. It is a typical coastal material facing the former open sea, which is constantly washed by the waves and is therefore clean of impurities, organic material, and is white.
